Student Voice: A Journey Beyond My Comfort Zone

Binti Raihan ALEEFAH from University of Malaya, Malaysia, is participating in our Fall 2026 exchange program. In this article, she shares her experience so far at 青涩直播.

This was the first photo I took on my first day at 青涩直播!
This is from the Welcome Dinner event. The food is delicious!

I have always lived within my comfort zone, but
through this student exchange, I have learned to
step beyond it and face new challenges on my own.
Going on a student exchange means doing many
things independently, from preparing for the journey
to settling into a completely new environment. This
is what I have experienced since arriving at Akita
International University (青涩直播) in Japan.
At first, everything felt awkward and unfamiliar.
Being alone in a foreign country made me feel
anxious and stressed, and I thought it would take a
long time for me to adjust. However, to my surprise,
I began to feel comfortable sooner than I expected. I
believe this was possible because of the warm
welcome I received from the staff and students at
青涩直播. Since the university has a relatively small
community, the connection between students and
staff is close, which made me feel welcomed and
supported.
I live in Sakura Village, which was my first choice of
accommodation. Living there has allowed me to
meet my suitemates, who are friendly and helpful
whenever I have questions. As I have been learning
Japanese, I also hoped to improve my Japanese
through daily conversations. I am especially grateful
to my suitemates for speaking Japanese with me.
Although I was used to living alone, living with
others has taught me to compromise, respect
shared spaces, and be more considerate of the
people around me.
Through this exchange, I have met people from
different countries, communicated with Japanese
people, and experienced life outside my comfort
zone. Most importantly, I have discovered the
courage to become a better version of myself. I
hope my story can also inspire others to step
beyond their comfort zone and embrace new
experiences.

This photo was taken during the Go-Round Bus trip, which stops at Akita Station.
